The Katsina State Government has confirmed the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar while in the custody of bandits, describing the development as a tragic loss to his family, Katsina State, and the nation at large.
The late military officer, who previously served as Director of Defence Information (DDI) at Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters, reportedly died from complications related to diabetes and hypertension during his captivity.
His death comes days after a viral video surfaced showing the retired General alongside his wife, both of whom had been abducted, appealing to authorities to meet the demands of their captors to secure their release.
In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr. Nasiru Muazu, the Katsina State Government expressed profound sadness over the incident and disclosed that extensive efforts had been made by the government and security agencies to secure his freedom.
“It is with profound sadness that we confirm the General’s death while in bandits’ captivity. Despite the relentless and concerted efforts of the State Government and various security agencies to secure his safe release, the situation ended in this tragedy,” the statement read.
The government noted that General Abubakar’s abduction and eventual death represent a significant loss not only to his immediate family but also to Katsina State and Nigeria, considering his years of dedicated service to the nation.
Governor Dikko Umaru Radda extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and described the incident as a painful reminder of the security challenges confronting many communities across the country.
According to the governor, the tragedy underscores the urgent need for stronger collaboration among government institutions, security agencies, and citizens in the fight against banditry and other criminal activities.
He reaffirmed the state’s commitment to working closely with the Federal Government and security agencies to ensure that those responsible for the abduction are identified, apprehended, and brought to justice.
The Katsina State Government also assured residents that efforts to combat insecurity and restore lasting peace across the state would continue without relent.
Prayers were offered for the peaceful repose of the late General’s soul, while the government called on Nigerians to support ongoing efforts aimed at ending banditry and protecting vulnerable communities.
