A Rivers State High Court in Oyigbo, Port Harcourt, has issued an interim injunction halting the impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu. The court order, delivered on Friday, restrains the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule, and two other officials, including the Clerk of the House, from sending any communication to the Chief Judge of the state.
The court also directed the Chief Judge, Justice Simeon Amadi, to refrain from receiving, forwarding, or taking any action on impeachment-related documents or resolutions for seven days. This includes any requests aimed at forming a panel to investigate the alleged misconduct of the governor and deputy governor.
Justice F.A. Fiberesima, who presided over the ex parte motion in two separate suits filed by the governor and his deputy, granted permission for the interim order and the originating processes to be served to the defendants at the gate of the Rivers State Assembly quarters. The Chief Judge was also directed to be served within the High Court premises.
The judge adjourned the case to January 23, 2026, for further hearing on the motion.
Meanwhile, the Rivers State House of Assembly has decided to proceed with the impeachment process against Fubara and Odu. Four lawmakers who had previously backed the suspension of the impeachment have since reversed their stance, accusing the governor of remaining unrepentant.
