More than 130 doctors have fallen ill after eating food contaminated with salmonella at the cafeteria of the Eduardo Liceaga Hospital in Mexico City.
Health authorities said the outbreak was identified after a sudden increase in cases of abdominal pain, diarrhoea and vomiting. At least 41 doctors were hospitalised, according to Mexico’s Health Secretary, David Kershenobich.
However, doctors involved in a protest said the number of cases could be as high as 227, with 67 people hospitalised, including 15 who reportedly required intensive care.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the outbreak and ordered a review of food service conditions at federal health institutions.
