Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has called for stronger partnerships and increased investment in renewable energy to expand access to reliable and affordable electricity across the state.
Sanwo-Olu made the call while participating in discussions on the Electrify Now agenda at the Global Renewables Summit, stressing that reliable and clean energy is critical for Lagos, a city with a population of more than 24 million people.
The governor said Africa possesses the natural resources required to drive the renewable energy transition but must attract the right investments to ensure clean energy becomes affordable and accessible to more people. He also urged stakeholders to build on the outcomes of COP31 through concrete actions.
Sanwo-Olu disclosed that he had approved 15 renewable energy distribution projects in Lagos, but noted that access to funding remains a major challenge. According to him, while funding is available, investors are often reluctant to take the initial risks associated with renewable energy projects.
He said Lagos is prepared to contribute to the global clean-energy transition but needs stronger partnerships and a financing system that recognises both the challenges and opportunities within Africa.
The governor stressed that achieving a fair global energy transition requires Africa to play an active role, not only as a beneficiary of clean-energy investments but also as a key part of the solution.
