Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, has urged manufacturers, brands and public institutions to move beyond basic customer satisfaction by building lasting relationships with consumers through trust, empathy, accessibility and sustainability.
Sanwo-Olu made the call on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, while speaking as Guest of Honour at the 5th Consumers Value Awards and Brand Xchange Awards held at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Ikeja. Represented by the Director-General of the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA), Mr. Afolabi Solebo, the Governor said the theme of the event, “Beyond Satisfaction: Redefining Consumer Value in a New Economy,” reflected the changing expectations of consumers.
According to the Governor, consumers are now better informed and increasingly influenced by digital platforms, while economic pressures have also changed the way they assess products and services. He said businesses must therefore move from simply meeting expectations to building relationships based on trust and accountability. Sanwo-Olu described the private sector as a major driver of Lagos’ economy, stressing that its influence comes with a responsibility to anticipate consumer needs and maintain quality even during difficult economic conditions.
He reaffirmed the Lagos State Government’s commitment to creating an environment that supports fair competition and consumer protection through infrastructure development, effective regulation and partnerships with the private sector. He said the administration would continue to promote policies aimed at protecting consumers from unfair practices while encouraging innovation and economic growth.
Earlier, Chairman of Brand Xchange and Convener of the Consumers Value Awards, Mr. Akonte Ekine, said the awards had recorded more than 38,000 votes and engagements since their launch five years ago, with nominations covering over 500 brands. He added that the initiative had expanded beyond recognising brands to include government institutions through the Citizens Scorecard.
Ekine said the platform was established to amplify the voice of consumers and encourage a marketplace built on greater value, accountability and trust. He urged consumers and citizens to actively speak up for better services and stronger accountability, stressing that improving consumer experience is a shared responsibility involving businesses, government and the public.
