The Lagos State Government has disbursed over ₦3.1 billion in compensation to more than 300 landowners whose properties were acquired for key public infrastructure projects across the state.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu presented the compensation cheques to beneficiaries on Monday at the Adeyemi Bero Auditorium, Alausa, Ikeja, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to fairness, transparency, and responsible governance.
Speaking at the event, the governor described the compensation as both a legal and moral obligation, stressing that infrastructure development must go hand in hand with respect for the rights of citizens.
Sanwo-Olu explained that all compensation claims underwent rigorous verification, including property valuation, ownership documentation, and due process, to ensure only legitimate beneficiaries received payment.
He assured residents that the acquired lands would be used strictly for public infrastructure projects aimed at improving the quality of life for Lagosians and would not be diverted for private interests.
The governor also encouraged beneficiaries to invest the compensation wisely in ventures that would provide long-term value for their families while assuring them that officials of the Lagos State Lands Bureau remain available to offer guidance without demanding any form of gratification.
Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat described the compensation exercise as a demonstration of the government’s resolve to honour its commitments to residents affected by development projects, while Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Lands Bureau, Kamar Olowoshago, said the initiative reflects the administration’s dedication to transparency, accountability, and inclusive development.
The compensation programme forms part of the Lagos State Government’s broader effort to balance infrastructure expansion with the protection of property rights and the welfare of affected residents.
