Lagos State Governor, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, has congratulated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, following the Senate’s passage of the constitutional amendment bill seeking to establish State Police across Nigeria.
The Senate on Wednesday approved all 26 clauses of the proposed legislation during the Committee of the Whole, a development widely regarded as one of the most significant reforms to Nigeria’s security framework in recent history.
In a statement personally signed on June 24, 2026, Governor Sanwo-Olu described the Senate’s approval as an “epochal milestone” and a major step toward strengthening security, deepening democracy, and advancing true federalism in Nigeria.
According to the governor, the emergence of State Police reflects President Tinubu’s long-standing commitment to constitutional reforms and decentralised policing, a vision he has consistently championed since serving as Governor of Lagos State between 1999 and 2007.
Sanwo-Olu commended the President’s leadership, resilience, and dedication to nation-building, noting that the reform would significantly enhance efforts to combat terrorism, criminality, and other security challenges facing the country.
“Today is a great day for our country — a day that demonstrates the triumph of progressive ideas, democratic values, and developmental governance over narrow interests,” the governor stated.
He further described President Tinubu as a champion of true federalism whose dedication to strengthening institutions and improving governance continues to shape Nigeria’s democratic evolution.
“State Police has been a key component of President Tinubu’s vision for a safer and more effective federation since his days as Governor of Lagos State. We are delighted to witness this historic breakthrough, made possible by a leader whose life has been devoted to public service and national development,” Sanwo-Olu said.
The governor also praised members of the Senate for what he called a historic and courageous decision, urging State Houses of Assembly across the federation to expedite consideration and approval of the constitutional amendment.
He expressed confidence that the establishment of State Police would enhance local intelligence gathering, improve community policing, strengthen public safety, and contribute to sustainable national development.
The passage of the bill now moves the constitutional amendment process to the next stage, where approval by state legislatures will be required before it can become law.
