Lagos State Governor, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, says the lasting legacy of his administration will extend beyond physical infrastructure to include stronger institutions and systems capable of sustaining good governance beyond his tenure.
Sanwo-Olu stated this in a goodwill message delivered on his behalf by the Secretary to the Lagos State Government, Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin, at the Church Thanksgiving Service marking the commencement of the 2026/2027 Legal Yearat the Cathedral Church of Christ, Marina, Lagos.
The Governor said the commencement of a new Legal Year provides an opportunity to reflect on the responsibility of public institutions to outlive the individuals who occupy public office. He noted that as his administration approaches the final phase of its tenure, attention should focus not only on projects completed but also on institutions and systems that will endure.
According to him, a meaningful legacy should be measured by the strength of institutions, citizens’ confidence and the systems established to serve future generations, rather than solely by roads, infrastructure and other physical projects delivered by government.
Sanwo-Olu placed the judiciary at the centre of this institutional legacy, stressing that a thriving society requires an effective justice system where rights are protected, disputes are fairly resolved, contracts are respected and citizens can seek justice regardless of their status.
He noted that a strong justice system is particularly important to Lagos because of its large population, vibrant economy and complex social environment. According to the Governor, confidence in the judiciary has implications for citizens, businesses, investment, economic activity and public trust in government.
The Governor assured that the Lagos State Government would continue, within its constitutional responsibilities, to support initiatives aimed at improving access to justice, strengthening the administration of justice and making the justice system more responsive to the needs of residents.
He, however, emphasised that the sustainability of any institutional legacy ultimately depends on the integrity and values of those entrusted with its stewardship. He urged members of the judiciary and the legal profession to uphold fairness, courage, accountability and the rule of law.
Sanwo-Olu also called on judges to continue dispensing justice without fear or favour, while urging lawyers to uphold the ethics and dignity of their profession. He reminded public servants that while political administrations and office holders may change, public institutions belong to the people and must remain strong and trusted.
The Governor congratulated members of the Lagos legal community on the commencement of the new Legal Year and prayed for wisdom and courage for the judiciary, as well as continued peace, progress and prosperity for Lagos State and Nigeria.
Judges and Magistrates, the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, members of the Bar and other distinguished guests attended the thanksgiving service.
