Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has called for increased access to affordable, long-term financing to help states and regions implement climate action projects that can improve lives and drive sustainable development.
Sanwo-Olu made the call at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, where he joined California Governor Gavin Newsom at a high-level meeting on Climate Action and the Just Transition, convened by the Office of the UN Deputy Secretary-General, Amina J. Mohammed.

Speaking on how Lagos is addressing the impact of flooding, rising sea levels and extreme heat, Sanwo-Olu said climate action and economic development must go hand in hand.
He highlighted Lagos’ efforts to promote cleaner transportation and convert more than 5,000 tonnes of daily waste into recycling, clean energy and employment opportunities.
The governor also said the recently formalised Sister State partnership between Lagos and California demonstrates the potential for subnational governments to collaborate on climate action and sustainable development.
