Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, has called on residents to actively plant and nurture trees as part of efforts to build a greener, healthier, and more climate-resilient Lagos.
Speaking at the 2026 Lagos State Tree Planting Day held at Eko Amore Gardens, Lekki, the Governor, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Barr. Abimbola Salu-Hundeyin, said tree planting remains one of the most effective nature-based solutions to climate change, stressing that the survival of every tree planted is as important as planting it.
Sanwo-Olu disclosed that 13,401 trees, representing 67 per cent of the State’s 20,000-tree target, had been planted across Lagos as of June 30, 2026. He also announced the commencement of a new planting season across the 57 LGAs and LCDAs, urging council chairmen to serve as “Tree Custodians” and ensure the protection of trees in their communities.
The Governor commended the Lagos State Parks and Gardens Agency (LASPARK) for driving the State’s greening initiative and unveiled the 2026 Lagos Tree Champions in recognition of individuals and organisations contributing to environmental sustainability.
Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, described the exercise as a strategic response to climate change, while LASPARK General Manager, Mrs. Adetoun Ibilola Popoola, said the Agency is strengthening tree survival through technology, community engagement, and continuous distribution of free tree seedlings to residents and organisations.
The event featured the presentation of awards to 21 Lagos Tree Champions and a ceremonial tree planting by Governor Sanwo-Olu and other dignitaries.
