Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has visited several flood-affected communities in Eti-Osa Local Government Area, assuring residents of the government’s commitment to implementing lasting measures to address recurring flooding.
The governor, accompanied by Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, and other members of the State Executive Council, inspected Ogombo, Monastery Road-Sangotedo, Gbetu, Iwerekun and other communities within Eti-Osa East Local Council Development Area.
During the inspection, Governor Sanwo-Olu interacted with residents and community leaders while assessing the extent of damage caused by the recent heavy rainfall, which submerged roads, homes and drainage channels in several parts of the state.
Residents appealed for urgent relief and long-term flood control projects, noting that repeated flooding has damaged properties, disrupted businesses, displaced families and made movement increasingly difficult.
The visit comes amid widespread flooding across Lagos following days of intense rainfall. Earlier this year, the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) listed Lagos among states at high risk of flooding in its 2026 Annual Flood Outlook.
Last month, the state government approved the dredging and maintenance of 28 additional primary drainage channels as part of efforts to mitigate flooding.
Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, explained that the recent downpours produced an unusually large volume of water that exceeded the capacity of drainage infrastructure in many locations.
According to him, the extreme weather event temporarily overwhelmed drainage systems across Victoria Island, Lekki, Ikeja, Gbagada, Mushin, Mafoluku and other parts of the state.
Wahab noted that similar weather conditions were experienced in other African countries and parts of North America, adding that previous interventions in flood-prone communities such as Ajiran and Agungi had improved stormwater discharge after blocked drainage channels were cleared and natural waterways restored.
He also reiterated the government’s appeal to residents to refrain from dumping refuse into drainage channels, warning that blocked drains significantly worsen flooding during periods of heavy rainfall.
Governor Sanwo-Olu assured affected residents that the state government would continue to strengthen flood mitigation measures to protect lives, property and critical infrastructure across Lagos.
