The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has proposed an Index Reclassification Steering Committee to support Nigeria’s return to major global financial indices and strengthen investor confidence.
The move follows S&P Dow Jones Indices’ placement of Nigeria on its 2027 Watchlist for a possible upgrade from a Standalone Market to Frontier Market status.
SEC Director-General Dr. Emomotimi Agama said the focus is now on consistent implementation of reforms, policy stability, foreign exchange predictability, regulatory transparency, and investor protection.
The proposed committee will bring together key financial institutions, including the CBN, Ministry of Finance, FIRS, NGX, CSCS, and FMDQ, to coordinate reforms and provide quarterly reports to global index providers ahead of the 2027 review.
