Vice-President Kashim Shettima has returned to Nigeria after representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the 21st Extraordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU) in Luanda, Angola.
During the high-level summit, Nigeria called for stronger African-led mechanisms for preventing and resolving conflicts, as well as urgent continental action against recurring xenophobic and Afrophobic attacks targeting Africans and other nationals in South Africa.
Shettima also reaffirmed Nigeria’s support for the Luanda Action Plan and advocated sustainable financing for Africa’s peace and security architecture. He further called for stronger collective responsibility among AU member states and greater African ownership of solutions to conflicts across the continent.
The Vice-President returned to Abuja after concluding his engagements in Angola. His absence, alongside President Tinubu’s ongoing trip abroad, had drawn criticism from some opposition figures, including Peoples Redemption Party National Chairman Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, who questioned who was in charge of the country while both leaders were outside Nigeria.
