Six Nigerians detained in Côte d’Ivoire since October 2025 over alleged economic crimes have been released following months of diplomatic and consular efforts by the Federal Government.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs disclosed that four of the detainees were freed on June 22, while the remaining two regained their freedom on June 23, after sustained engagements between the Nigerian Embassy in Abidjan and Ivorian authorities.
According to the ministry, the Nigerian Embassy maintained regular consular access to the detainees, monitored their welfare throughout their detention, and held continuous discussions with Côte d’Ivoire’s Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Justice, as well as other relevant institutions, to secure their release.
The ministry commended Nigeria’s Ambassador to Côte d’Ivoire, Ambassador Nwabiola Ezenwa, and embassy officials for their professionalism and persistent diplomatic efforts, which ultimately led to the successful resolution of the case.
It also expressed appreciation to the Government of Côte d’Ivoire for its cooperation, describing the outcome as a reflection of the strong diplomatic ties and mutual respect between both countries.
Reaffirming its commitment to protecting Nigerians abroad, the Federal Government said the welfare and safety of its citizens remain a key priority of Nigeria’s foreign policy. It also advised Nigerians living or travelling overseas to obey the laws of their host countries and maintain contact with the nearest Nigerian embassy or consulate for assistance when needed.
