South African football is in mourning following the death of Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Jayden Adams, who passed away at the age of 25.
Adams, regarded as one of South Africa’s brightest football talents, recently represented the country at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, featuring in the team’s historic campaign that saw Bafana Bafana reach the knockout stage for the first time.
The midfielder also played a key role in Mamelodi Sundowns’ successful CAF Champions League triumph during the 2025/26 season after joining the club from Stellenbosch FC in January 2025.
His death comes just weeks after he lost his grandmother, Marianna Adams. Despite the personal loss, Adams displayed remarkable professionalism by featuring for South Africa in their World Cup match against the Czech Republic.
South Africa’s Minister of Sport, Gayton McKenzie, the South African Football Players’ Union (SAFPU), and members of the football community have paid tribute to the midfielder, describing his passing as a devastating loss to South African football.
The cause of Adams’ death has not been officially disclosed, and authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding his passing.
