The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has urged the Federal and State Governments to immediately release funds for the implementation of the newly signed 2026 agreement, including the prompt payment of accumulated salary arrears to its members.
The demand was outlined in a communiqué issued at the conclusion of SSANU’s 55th National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, signed by the union’s National President, Comrade Mohammed Haruna Ibrahim.
Key Demands & Recommendations
- Agreement Implementation: Demands immediate, non-discriminatory rollout of the June 29, 2026 Federal Government-SSANU agreement, which includes a 35% salary review under the Consolidated Non-Teaching Staff Salary Structure (CONTISS).
- Payment of Arrears: Calls on university authorities and government bodies to disburse outstanding 25% and 35% salary increase arrears to cushion the impact of economic hardship.
- TETFund Intervention: Welcomes the Federal Government’s HOPE-EDU initiative and demands the urgent release of the ₦2.53 billion 2026 TETFund allocation granted to each public university.
- Monitored Compliance: Urges the activation of the Implementation Monitoring Committee to oversee adherence to negotiated benefits and ensure equal career progression up to CONTISS 15.
- Protection Against Victimization: Warns university management against punitive reassignments, delayed promotions, or denial of entitlements to union members.
“The implementation of the agreement must be done promptly, fully and without encroachment or discrimination… Council frowns at Vice-Chancellors and Heads of Institutions that are yet to implement or pay arrears,” the communiqué stated.
