Several students and other residents are feared dead after a three-storey hostel building collapsed late Sunday night in Amokpala, Oko, Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The building, identified as Elite Five Star Lodge, reportedly caved in, trapping an unconfirmed number of occupants beneath the rubble. Rescue efforts are ongoing, with emergency responders working to locate and evacuate those still trapped.
Some injured victims have been rescued and taken to nearby hospitals for treatment, while the exact number of casualties has yet to be confirmed.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said a joint rescue operation involving the police, the Anambra State Fire Service, and the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) was immediately activated following the collapse.
Ikenga said the police-led emergency response team remains at the scene, coordinating rescue efforts and ensuring the safety of residents as search operations continue.
Authorities have urged the public to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information while emergency personnel continue the rescue mission. Further updates are expected as officials assess the full extent of the tragedy.
