South African Premier Soccer League side Chippa United have officially confirmed the return of Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, ending months of uncertainty over the Nigerian international’s future.
The Eastern Cape-based club announced the 30-year-old’s return on Sunday through a statement on its official communication channels, marking a fresh chapter for the goalkeeper after his unsuccessful search for a new club.
Nwabali left Chippa United in February in pursuit of a new challenge following his impressive performances for Nigeria at consecutive Africa Cup of Nations tournaments.
The goalkeeper’s reputation soared after playing a pivotal role in Nigeria’s run to the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire, where his penalty-saving heroics earned widespread acclaim. He further enhanced his standing with another series of commanding displays at the 2025 AFCON in Morocco, fuelling expectations of a move to a bigger club.
With less than six months remaining on his contract, Nwabali requested to leave Chippa United, and the club granted his request. However, the goalkeeper later admitted he had not secured an agreement with another club before becoming a free agent.
Following his departure, Nwabali was linked with several clubs, including Raja Casablanca, Al-Ettifaq, and Queens Park Rangers, but none of the reported moves materialised.
His most advanced negotiations were with Tanzanian club Simba SC, but the proposed transfer reportedly collapsed due to disagreements over personal terms and financial conditions.
The prolonged search for a new club left Nwabali without competitive football for several months, raising concerns about his status as Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper.
His return to Chippa United offers both the player and the club an opportunity for a fresh start. Having joined the South African side from Katsina United in 2022, Nwabali established himself as one of the Premier Soccer League’s top goalkeepers.
The move is expected to provide him with regular playing time as he seeks to regain top form and strengthen his claim to the Super Eagles’ number one jersey ahead of upcoming international competitions.
