Nigeria’s Super Falcons have failed to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup after suffering a 2-1 defeat to South Africa in the play-off.
The loss means Nigeria will miss the Women’s World Cup for the first time since the tournament began in 1991.
South Africa took the lead in the 56th minute and doubled their advantage in the 77th minute. Nigeria pulled one back through Christy Ucheibe in the 93rd minute after the Super Falcons were awarded a penalty following a handball, but they could not find an equaliser before the final whistle.
The defeat ends Nigeria’s hopes of progressing to the intercontinental play-offs and securing a place at the 2027 tournament.
