The Chairman of Bungudu Local Government Area of Zamfara State, Nura Umar Bungudu, has reportedly been abducted by suspected armed bandits alongside three other persons following an attack on his residence.
According to local sources, the gunmen invaded Bungudu town on Thursday night before storming the chairman’s home, where they allegedly abducted him, members of his household and three other individuals.
The attack reportedly claimed the lives of two police officers and a local vigilante, popularly known as Askarawa, while another person sustained gunshot injuries and is currently receiving medical treatment.
Security personnel were said to have engaged the attackers in a gun battle, leading to the rescue of the chairman’s wives and children. However, the council chairman and three other victims were reportedly taken away by the assailants.
The incident occurred less than 20 kilometres from Gusau, the Zamfara State capital, highlighting ongoing security concerns in the area.
As of the time of filing this report, the Zamfara State Police Command and the state government had not issued an official statement confirming or denying the incident.
Meanwhile, security operatives, supported by local vigilantes, have reportedly launched a rescue operation to secure the release of the abducted chairman and the other victims.
