Switzerland secured their place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Algeria on Thursday in Vancouver.
The Swiss side delivered a composed performance and will now face the winner of Friday’s knockout clash between Colombia and Ghana.
Switzerland took the lead through Breel Embolo, who finished from close range after an excellent run and cross by the lively Johan Manzambi, whose pace and creativity caused constant problems for the Algerian defence.
Dan Ndoye sealed the victory with Switzerland’s second goal, firing through a crowded penalty area. Algeria goalkeeper Luca Zidane managed to get a hand to the shot but could not prevent it from finding the back of the net.
The defeat marks a disappointing end to Algeria’s World Cup campaign, as they join Ivory Coast, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Senegal among the African nations eliminated in the Round of 32. Morocco remains the only African team to advance to the Round of 16.
