Liverpool snatched a dramatic 2-2 draw against Newcastle United at St James’ Park after Dominik Szoboszlai converted a 99th-minute penalty.
Newcastle twice took the lead through Anthony Elanga and Joe Willock, but Liverpool fought back on both occasions. Cody Gakpo scored Liverpool’s first equaliser before Szoboszlai completed the comeback from the spot deep into stoppage time.
The decisive penalty was awarded after substitute Victor Muñoz was fouled by Lewis Hall inside the box. Szoboszlai kept his composure and fired the spot-kick into the top corner to rescue a point for Liverpool.
The result means both sides begin the new Premier League campaign with a draw under their new managers.
The match was also marked by emotional pre-match tributes to Newcastle legend Kevin Keegan, adding to the occasion at St James’ Park.
