President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed renowned chartered accountant and former Chief Executive Officer of KPMG Nigeria, Kunle Elebute, as Chairman of the Governing Board of the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria (FRCN).
The appointment was announced in a statement issued by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, who said the move reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening corporate governance, promoting transparency, and enhancing investor confidence in Nigeria’s financial reporting framework.
According to the statement, Elebute’s appointment comes at a critical period as the Financial Reporting Council advances reforms aimed at aligning Nigeria’s corporate reporting standards with global best practices and supporting a more competitive investment environment.
A highly respected financial expert, Elebute brings more than four decades of professional experience spanning Nigeria, West Africa, and international markets. Throughout his distinguished career, he has held several leadership positions within KPMG, including Senior Partner and Chief Executive Officer of KPMG Nigeria, Chairman of KPMG West Africa, and Chairman of KPMG Africa.
He also served on KPMG’s regional and global boards, including membership of the firm’s Global Board Audit Committee, where he contributed to shaping governance and oversight policies across international operations.
Widely recognised for his expertise in auditing, financial advisory services, risk management, corporate governance, and strategic business transformation, Elebute is expected to provide strong leadership as the council pursues its regulatory and institutional objectives.
The Presidency noted that his appointment aligns with ongoing efforts to deepen transparency and accountability in financial reporting while supporting key economic initiatives, including engagements under the UK-Nigeria Enhanced Trade and Investment Partnership.
The Federal Government expressed confidence that Elebute’s extensive experience, leadership credentials, and governance expertise will strengthen the FRCN’s mandate and contribute to the successful implementation of the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, particularly in fostering a transparent, investment-friendly, and globally competitive economy.
His appointment is expected to further reinforce confidence in Nigeria’s financial reporting ecosystem and support efforts to improve corporate accountability and regulatory compliance across both the public and private sectors.
