President Bola Tinubu has directed a comprehensive reform of Nigerian football following the country’s repeated failure to qualify for major regional, continental and global tournaments.
The President said the reform should address longstanding weaknesses in governance, administration, stakeholder representation, player development pathways, domestic competitions and accountability within the football system.
Tinubu noted that while other sports have made significant progress under the re-established National Sports Commission, football continues to struggle due to structural deficiencies.
He stressed the need for Nigerian football to match the country’s wealth of talent, passion and resources with stronger institutions and sustained performance.
The President directed the Chairman of the National Sports Commission to work with the Nigeria Football Federation Secretariat and relevant stakeholders to maintain essential football administration while leading a broad and consultative reform process.
The process is also expected to involve engagement with FIFA and CAF while ensuring Nigeria remains compliant with international football regulations.
Tinubu urged football stakeholders and Nigerians to support the transition and work collectively towards building a stronger, more accountable and successful football system.
