President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the death of retired Major-General Rabe Abubakar, who reportedly died while being held captive by terrorists in Katsina State.
In a statement released on Saturday, the President described the development as shocking and heartbreaking, extending his condolences to the family of the late military officer, the Katsina State Government, and members of the Nigerian Armed Forces.
General Abubakar, a former Director of Defence Information at the Defence Headquarters, was abducted while travelling to his hometown. Following a distinguished military career spanning several decades, he had retired from active service only a few years ago.
President Tinubu particularly sympathized with the General’s family and expressed concern over the continued captivity of his wife, who remains in the custody of the kidnappers.
The President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to combating terrorism and insecurity, stressing that the Nigerian government would not bow to pressure from terrorist groups or accede to demands for the release of detained criminal elements in exchange for hostages.
According to him, the actions of terrorists and bandits would not deter the government’s resolve to protect citizens and preserve national security.
Recalling his Democracy Day address, President Tinubu reiterated his warning to criminal groups across the country.
“Bandits, kidnappers, and sponsors of terror should now surrender or face the full force of the Nigerian State. These windows of surrender will not remain open forever. And no mercy will be shown to those who trade in the blood of Nigerians,” the President stated.
He further called on Nigerians to remain united and steadfast in the collective fight against insecurity, expressing confidence that the nation would ultimately overcome terrorism and criminality.
President Tinubu described the death of General Abubakar as a painful sacrifice that should strengthen the nation’s determination to defeat terrorism and insurgency.
He emphasized that terrorists remain enemies of the Nigerian state and reaffirmed that the government would continue to pursue them relentlessly until peace and security are fully restored across the country.
The President prayed for the peaceful repose of the late General’s soul and asked God to grant his family the strength to bear the loss during this difficult period.
