President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid a heartfelt tribute to the late Alhaji Ganiyu Kolapo Oseni, describing him as a visionary administrator, elder statesman, progressive politician, and a key figure in Nigeria’s democratic struggle.
In a personal statement titled “Goodnight, Alhaji Kola Oseni, goodnight, my brother,” President Tinubu expressed deep sorrow over Oseni’s passing, noting that his death marked the loss of “an iroko among men” and a trusted ally in Nigeria’s political history.
The President recalled their long-standing relationship, describing the deceased as not only a political associate but also a brother, mentor, and friend who played a significant role in his political journey.
He noted that Alhaji Oseni was instrumental in his early political career, including his emergence as Senator representing Lagos West and later Governor of Lagos State.
Tinubu highlighted Oseni’s contributions to the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN) during the Second Republic, where he served as Organising Secretary under the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, and his role in strengthening political institutions in Lagos State.
The President further acknowledged Oseni’s commitment to democracy, recalling their shared involvement in the struggle to uphold the June 12, 1993 presidential election and end military rule in Nigeria.
According to him, Oseni remained a steadfast advocate of democratic ideals, good governance, and national progress throughout his lifetime.
President Tinubu also revealed that Oseni supported his presidential ambition in 2022 despite being abroad at the time, adding that he remained grateful for his encouragement and prayers.
Describing him as a man of vision and sacrifice, the President said Oseni’s legacy would continue to endure through his contributions to Lagos State, Nigeria’s democratic evolution, and the lives he impacted.
He prayed for the repose of his soul and asked Almighty Allah to grant him eternal rest in Aljannah, while also seeking comfort and strength for his family.
