President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has assured that Nigeria’s refineries will be revived following a comprehensive restructuring and strategic reset aimed at making them productive and profitable.
Tinubu gave the assurance on Thursday in Abuja while receiving the National Executive of the Nigerian Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), led by its National President, Comrade Salimon Akanni Oladiti.
The President said the government would adopt a systematic and evidence-based approach to address the structural, operational, financial and managerial challenges affecting the refineries.
He stressed that the goal was not merely to have refineries operating, but to ensure they become profitable and deliver value to Nigerians.
Tinubu also promised greater inclusion of NUPENG in the implementation of the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Initiative, while challenging the union to ensure the benefits of the programme reach ordinary commuters.
NUPENG President Oladiti commended the President for removing the fuel subsidy, describing the decision as courageous and saying it had freed resources for infrastructure development.
He also praised the Federal Government’s ongoing highway projects, including the 750-kilometre Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and 1,068-kilometre Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway.
However, Oladiti urged the President to sustain efforts to revive the country’s refineries, saying functional refineries would strengthen energy security, reduce dependence on imported petroleum products and create more jobs.
The NUPENG leadership subsequently decorated President Tinubu as the Grand Patron of the union.
