The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has deployed its Emergency Response Team (ERT) following a train derailment involving the Warri–Itakpe passenger service along the Agbor axis in Delta State on Monday.
The train, which was reportedly en route from Itakpe to Warri, derailed, leading to fatalities and injuries among passengers. The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) confirmed that at least three passengers lost their lives in the incident.
In response, NEMA said its Director General, Zubaida Umar, immediately activated emergency protocols upon receiving alerts and ordered the deployment of response teams to the scene.
The agency added that its personnel are working in collaboration with the NRC, security agencies, and other stakeholders to ensure the rescue and support of affected passengers.
NEMA also confirmed ongoing coordination with NRC Managing Director, Kayode Opeifa, to manage the situation and provide necessary assistance.
The NRC stated that emergency responders were already on-site providing medical aid and evacuation support to survivors.
The derailment comes less than a month after the NRC temporarily suspended the Warri–Itakpe Train Service due to operational and technical concerns raised by engineers, raising fresh questions about rail safety and maintenance.
Authorities are expected to launch a full investigation into the cause of the incident.
