US President Donald Trump has asked Apple to rename Lake Ontario as “Lake America” on its Maps platform, according to US Interior Secretary Doug Burgum.
Burgum said Trump had contacted Apple directly after signing an executive order directing the renaming of the lake in the United States. He said the president wanted the change reflected across Apple’s mapping service and suggested that the new name could appear on Apple Maps soon.
Google has already adopted the name “Lake America” for users accessing its maps from the United States, while users in Canada continue to see the traditional name, Lake Ontario. International users are reportedly shown both names as “Lake Ontario (Lake America).”
The proposed renaming has drawn attention because Lake Ontario is shared by the United States and Canada, raising questions over how a unilateral US name change would be handled internationally.
