United States President Donald Trump has pledged Washington’s support for Lebanon’s efforts to achieve lasting peace with Israel, reaffirming America’s commitment to the country’s security, stability, and sovereignty.
Speaking during a meeting at the White House with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, Trump described Lebanon as a nation that has endured decades of hardship and promised continued US assistance to help the country overcome its security challenges.
President Aoun, the first Lebanese leader to visit Washington since 2009, sought continued American political and military support, particularly for the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF), which have begun deploying to parts of southern Lebanon under a US-backed framework agreement with Israel.
He described the Lebanese military as the backbone of the country’s security and stability, stressing that strengthening the armed forces is essential to preserving national unity and extending state authority.
The discussions come as Lebanon faces growing international pressure to disarm the Iran-backed Hezbollah group, a key condition set by Israel for ending its military presence in parts of southern Lebanon.
Despite the ongoing peace efforts, tensions remain high after the Lebanese army reported that Israeli forces opened fire near troops deploying in a designated pilot zone, an allegation the Israeli military said involved only warning shots.
The United States has continued to back Lebanon’s efforts to strengthen state institutions while encouraging dialogue aimed at reducing regional tensions and advancing long-term peace in the Middle East.
