At least two commuters lost their lives on Sunday following a multiple-vehicle accident on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, at the Kara Bridge axis inward Mowe.
The accident reportedly occurred when a truck conveying bags of flour lost control and rammed into several vehicles on the busy highway. The vehicles involved included commercial buses and private cars, causing serious injuries to several commuters.
A Toyota Corolla, which had been parked on the bridge due to a flat tyre, was also hit in the crash, leaving its driver injured.
Emergency responders from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) were immediately deployed to the scene to conduct rescue operations and manage traffic.
Confirming the incident via its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, LASTMA disclosed that the crash involved a truck, a Toyota Corolla, a RAV4 SUV, and two fully loaded interstate Mazda buses. The agency added that injured victims were promptly taken to nearby hospitals for medical attention.
“A multiple-vehicle crash involving a truck that fell on its side, a Corolla, an SUV (RAV4), and two loaded interstate Mazda buses has been reported on Kara Bridge inward Mowe. Police officers and our officials are on scene managing the situation,” LASTMA stated.
The crash caused severe traffic congestion, leaving many motorists stranded for hours. However, LASTMA later announced that partial recovery of the affected vehicles had been completed, which helped ease traffic flow.
“Our men are on ground to ensure the safety of motorists and other road users, while also working with FRSC officials to restore smooth traffic flow,” the agency added.
Safety Concerns Resurface
The latest incident has once again raised concerns over the recurring accidents on Kara Bridge, a location that has witnessed several fatal crashes in recent times.
On October 30, 2025, at least six people, including a police officer, were killed in a separate multiple-truck collision on the same bridge. That incident involved several trucks, including a fuel tanker, one of which reportedly veered off the road, crashed into the bridge’s brick barricade, and plunged into the river. One of the victims was said to have been burnt beyond recognition, leading to extensive damage and prolonged gridlock on the expressway.
As of the time of filing this report, authorities are yet to release a comprehensive report on Sunday’s crash, including the final number of casualties.
