Two people have died while two others sustained injuries after two commercial trucks collided and caught fire along the Awka-Enugu Expressway in Anambra State.
The crash occurred around 11:47 p.m. on Thursday opposite Jezco Filling Station. According to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the vehicles involved were a Mercedes 911 truck and a Mark tanker truck belonging to Shafa Energy.
The FRSC said the crash was suspected to have been caused by speeding and loss of control, with ongoing road construction also contributing to the danger on the route.
Four male adults were involved in the accident. Two died in the crash, while the injured victims were rescued and taken to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu Teaching Hospital, Awka, by good Samaritans.
The collision caused a fire that left the two deceased victims trapped in the wreckage. Their bodies were reportedly burnt beyond recognition.
The FRSC urged motorists to avoid speeding, particularly around construction zones, and obey traffic regulations. It also called for the completion of the ongoing road works to reduce the risks associated with two-way traffic on a single lane.
