Oriwu Senior Model College, Ikorodu, under Education District II, Lagos State, has taken delivery of a brand-new mobile clinic provided by the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) to strengthen access to prompt, quality, and responsive healthcare services for students and staff of the school.
The intervention forms part of the Federal Government’s efforts to improve the overall quality of basic education by addressing not only academic needs but also the health and well-being of learners. Established in 1999, the Universal Basic Education (UBE) Programme is a reform initiative designed to expand access to quality basic education for all Nigerians, with UBEC coordinating its implementation across the country.
As part of its mandate, UBEC provides intervention support to states and local governments to promote accessible, equitable, and quality basic education. The provision of the mobile clinic therefore represents an important investment in strengthening healthcare support within the school environment and promoting a healthier atmosphere for teaching and learning.
The mobile clinic was presented to the Tutor-General/Permanent Secretary (TG/PS), Education District II, Mr. Omotayo Layemo Sanni, by the Principal of Oriwu Senior Model College, Mrs. Iyabo Elushakin. She was accompanied by the Junior School Principal, Mr. M. A. Raheem, during the presentation at the District Headquarters, Maryland.
Speaking on the development, Mr. Sanni expressed appreciation to the Federal Government and UBEC for the intervention, describing the mobile clinic as a welcome and timely initiative. He noted that the facility would provide prompt medical attention to students and staff of Oriwu Senior Model College, thereby contributing to the health, safety, and general well-being of the school community.
The TG/PS further observed that the mobile clinic could serve a broader purpose beyond the immediate needs of the school, noting that it would also provide valuable healthcare support to other members of the Education District II community whenever the need arises.
He reaffirmed the District’s commitment to ensuring that the facility is properly utilised, adequately maintained, and sustained for the benefit of its intended beneficiaries.
The intervention is expected to complement the ongoing efforts of the Lagos State Government to provide a safe, healthy, conducive, and supportive learning environment for students across Education District II.
