Ride-hailing giant Uber is winding down its operations in Nigeria and Uganda, effective September 2, 2026, after more than a decade of service in the two African markets.
Uber launched its operations in Lagos in 2014 and quickly became a major part of Nigeria’s urban transportation system, providing ride-hailing services to millions of commuters across the country.
In a statement to users, the company said the decision followed a thorough review of its business operations, while acknowledging that its exit could disrupt the daily routines of customers who have relied on the platform for transportation.
Uber’s departure from Nigeria and Uganda marks its exit from two African markets, although the company said its operations across the rest of the continent will remain unaffected.
The development brings an end to Uber’s 12-year presence in Nigeria and marks a significant shift in the country’s competitive ride-hailing sector.
