The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has strongly criticised FIFA’s decision to suspend the one-match ban imposed on United States forward Folarin Balogun, describing the move as one that has “crossed a red line.”
The decision allows Balogun to feature in the United States’ FIFA World Cup Round of 16 clash against Belgium despite receiving a straight red card in his side’s 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina.
In a strongly worded statement, UEFA said FIFA’s disciplinary decision undermines the principles of fairness, consistency, and transparency that govern the game.
According to UEFA, football’s credibility depends on the uniform application of its laws, warning that any deviation from established rules could have far-reaching consequences for the sport globally.
Balogun had originally received an automatic one-match suspension after being shown a straight red card following a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review. Under FIFA regulations, such dismissals normally result in an automatic suspension.
The controversy intensified after reports emerged that U.S. President Donald Trump appealed directly to FIFA President Gianni Infantino to review the sanction. FIFA’s disciplinary committee subsequently suspended the implementation of the ban for a one-year probationary period, allowing Balogun to play.
The decision has also drawn criticism from Belgium’s camp, with head coach Rudi Garcia expressing disbelief over the ruling.
The unprecedented development has sparked debate across the football world over the independence of disciplinary processes and the consistent application of the Laws of the Game.
