King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, who made history as the world’s youngest reigning monarch after ascending the throne at just three years old, has died at the age of 34. The monarch was the Omukama, or traditional king, of Tooro, one of Uganda’s most prominent traditional kingdoms.
The announcement of his death was made late Thursday by the Prime Minister of the Tooro Kingdom, Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki, who expressed deep sorrow over the passing of the monarch. In a statement shared on X, Akiiki said: “It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that I announce the passing of His Majesty the Omukama of Tooro, King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.”
King Oyo ascended the throne in 1995 following the death of his father, becoming a global symbol of Uganda’s traditional monarchy and gaining international recognition because of his exceptionally young age at accession. Despite taking on the role as a child, his reign continued into adulthood, with the kingdom retaining its cultural and traditional significance within Uganda’s modern political system.
His death at 34 brings to an end a reign that lasted more than three decades and spanned his childhood, adolescence and adulthood. The Tooro Kingdom is expected to begin traditional and official processes to honour the late monarch and address the succession to the throne, while tributes are likely to follow from across Uganda and beyond.
