The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has assured students, staff, and parents of the safety and welfare of students following reports of a suspected diarrhoea outbreak in some hostels on campus.
Concerns had emerged from Moremi Hall, a female hostel, where several students were reported to be experiencing symptoms including vomiting, stooling, and fever. The situation sparked anxiety among parents and students, with some raising alarm over possible contamination of the hostel water supply.
A concerned parent, who raised the issue, urged authorities to act swiftly, noting that multiple students had reportedly been ill for days. Another parent also called for urgent intervention to prevent further spread.
In response, UNILAG management, through a statement signed by the Head of Communication Unit, Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem, said the situation is being treated with urgency and seriousness.
The university disclosed that relevant departments have begun a full assessment of the water supply system, including water quality tests, to determine the cause of the reported illness and any potential risks.
“The matter is being treated with utmost urgency and seriousness,” the statement read, adding that immediate measures have been put in place to safeguard students’ health and welfare.
The institution also urged members of the university community to avoid spreading unverified information that could cause panic, assuring that official updates will be communicated through appropriate channels once investigations are concluded.
