The Governing Council of the University of Port Harcourt has approved the appointment of Princewill Chike as the institution’s 10th Vice-Chancellor.
Professor Chike, who previously served as Rivers State Commissioner for Health under the administration of former Governor Nyesom Wike, will take over from the outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Owunari Georgewill, whose tenure ends on July 13, 2026.
The announcement was contained in a statement issued by the university and signed by its Public Relations Officer, Sam Kpenu.
According to the institution, Chike’s appointment was approved by the 17th Governing Council following a rigorous selection process conducted in line with the provisions of the Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act and the University of Port Harcourt Act.
The university stated that the process involved a Search Team and a Joint Council-Senate Selection Board, both of which carried out their responsibilities in accordance with established regulations governing the appointment of vice-chancellors in Nigerian universities.
The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Mao Ohuabunwa, congratulated the newly appointed Vice-Chancellor and expressed confidence in his ability to provide strategic and visionary leadership for the institution.
Professor Chike is expected to officially assume office on July 13, 2026, succeeding Professor Georgewill, who will preside over his final convocation ceremony as Vice-Chancellor on June 5 and 6.
The appointment marks a new chapter for the University of Port Harcourt as it continues efforts to strengthen academic excellence, research, innovation, and institutional development.
