Abuja – The United States has delivered military supplies to Nigerian security agencies as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen security operations across several parts of the country.
The delivery was confirmed on Tuesday in a post on X (formerly Twitter) by the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM).
“U.S. forces delivered critical military supplies to our Nigerian partners in Abuja. This delivery supports Nigeria’s ongoing operations and emphasizes our shared security partnership,” AFRICOM stated.
The development comes amid renewed commitments by the United States to deepen security cooperation with Nigeria, including the provision of enhanced intelligence support, defence equipment, and other military articles to support operations against terrorist groups and violent extremists.
Last November, the Federal Government dispatched a high-level delegation to Washington, D.C., aimed at strengthening bilateral security relations and expanding avenues for cooperation between both countries.
The delegation was led by the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, and held engagements with senior officials across the US Congress, the White House Faith Office, the State Department, the National Security Council, and the Department of Defense.
Members of the delegation included the Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi; the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede; the Chief of Defence Intelligence, Lieutenant General Emmanuel Undiandeye; the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun; and representatives from the Office of the National Security Adviser.
During the meetings, the Nigerian delegation refuted allegations of genocide in the country, stressing that violent attacks affect communities across religious and ethnic lines. The delegation warned that such narratives distort realities on the ground and risk deepening divisions among Nigerians.
According to a statement by the presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, the discussions helped correct misconceptions about Nigeria, strengthened mutual trust, and advanced a coordinated, solution-driven partnership between both countries.
“The engagement reinforced a collaborative approach to protecting vulnerable communities, particularly in the Middle Belt,” Onanuga said.
He disclosed that Nigeria and the United States agreed to implement a non-binding cooperation framework and to establish a Joint Working Group to ensure effective coordination in agreed areas of partnership.
Onanuga added that the Nigerian government reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing civilian protection measures, while the United States expressed readiness to provide complementary support, including humanitarian assistance to affected communities in the Middle Belt and technical support to strengthen early-warning mechanisms.
The latest delivery of military supplies underscores the growing security partnership between Nigeria and the United States amid ongoing efforts to address terrorism, banditry, and other security challenges.
