The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has directed the FCT Traffic Management authorities to clamp down on car racing in residential areas following complaints that the activity poses a danger to residents and other road users.
Speaking in Abuja on Monday, Wike said the issue had not been formally reported to his office until it was raised during an interview, assuring residents that immediate steps would be taken to address it.
According to the minister, while some motorists may be using the roads to showcase their quality, public safety must remain the top priority.
He stressed that car racing would no longer be tolerated in residential neighbourhoods, noting that enthusiasts should restrict such activities to designated locations.
Wike also reminded residents that individual rights must not endanger the lives of others, emphasizing that protecting lives is more important than recreational driving.
However, he clarified that the restriction applies only to residential areas, adding that the directive does not extend to highways.
