The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has warned inter-city road transport operators against arbitrary and unjustified fare hikes during the ongoing yuletide travel season.
The caution was contained in a statement signed by the Commission’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Ondaje Ijagwu, following a rise in consumer complaints from different parts of the country. The FCCPC acknowledged that seasonal demand, operational pressures, and other legitimate cost factors could influence transport fares, but stressed that consumers have the right to clear, accurate, and timely information on pricing before travel.
According to the Commission, any adjustment to fares must be transparent, properly communicated, and applied fairly to passengers.
The FCCPC noted that the complaints coincided with reports of reductions in the pump price of premium motor spirit in some parts of the country. While fuel costs are only one of several factors affecting transport pricing, the Commission said unexplained fare increases raise valid consumer protection concerns.
Commenting on the issue, the FCCPC’s Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Tunji Bello, said the Commission is closely monitoring market practices throughout the festive period. He added that engagements with transport unions, park managers, and operators nationwide have been intensified to encourage responsible pricing, voluntary compliance, and orderly market behaviour.
Bello clarified that price increases are not illegal in themselves. However, practices that exploit consumers or take unfair advantage of heightened seasonal demand may attract sanctions under the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA) 2018. He warned that inadequate fare disclosure, coercive conduct, or coordinated pricing arrangements designed to disadvantage consumers would be subjected to strict regulatory scrutiny, with violators facing stiff penalties.
The Commission advised travellers to confirm fares before departure, keep evidence of payment, and report suspected unfair practices through its complaint portal at complaints.fccpc.gov.ng or via the hotlines 0805 600 3030 and 0805 600 2020.
