Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema has been re-elected for a second five-year term after securing 2,965,326 votes, according to results announced by the Electoral Commission of Zambia.
Hichilema, who contested under the United Party for National Development (UPND), defeated his closest challenger, Brian Mundubile, who polled about 1.86 million votes. The result gives Hichilema a decisive victory in the August 13, 2026 presidential election.
The election recorded 5,028,616 votes cast, with 4,902,050 declared valid and 126,566 rejected votes.
Hichilema’s re-election extends his presidency into a second term after he first came to power in 2021.
The election was closely watched amid concerns over security and the conduct of the polls. Vote counting was temporarily suspended following reports of attacks on election officials and the theft of ballot papers before it later resumed.
