Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has dismissed Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Oleksandr Syrsky, and appointed Mykhailo Drapaty as the country’s new army chief following days of political tension and public protests.
Zelensky announced the appointment on Tuesday, thanking Syrsky for his service and leadership in defending Ukraine during the ongoing war with Russia.
Syrsky’s removal comes after the controversial dismissal of former Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, whose exit sparked nationwide protests. Fedorov had accused Syrsky of obstructing military reforms and influencing his removal—allegations the former army chief denied.
The newly appointed Commander-in-Chief, Mykhailo Drapaty, previously served as Joint Forces Commander and is regarded as one of Ukraine’s experienced battlefield commanders. He pledged to uphold his responsibilities and continue leading the country’s defence efforts.
Fedorov welcomed Drapaty’s appointment, describing it as a “breath of fresh air” and expressing optimism that the leadership change would accelerate reforms within the military.
The latest reshuffle comes as Ukraine continues to resist Russia’s invasion, with both sides intensifying aerial attacks while efforts to modernise the country’s armed forces remain a key priority.
