Lagos Govt Commence Repairs On The Alapere Pedestrian Bridge

the Lagos State Government has commenced construction works on the damaged pedestrian bridge at Alapere/Estate Bus Stop on the Third Axial Road.

the Special Adviser to the Governor on Infrastructure, Olufemi Daramola during an inspection to the site, said an assessment and the necessary integrity tests on the bridge has been conducted, to ascertain the level of reconstruction works to be carried out on the bridge to make it appropriate for continued public use.

According to the Special Adviser, based on the results of the tests carried out, a new design for the bridge with increased vehicular headroom is ready for implementation.

The contractor has started carrying out preliminary works such as the dismantling of steel elements and handrails of the damaged pedestrian bridge immediately and demobilisation of the standing sections of the Bridge” he said.

While urging pedestrians and commuters to exercise utmost caution., he said, “In the interim, we have deployed more traffic personnel to manage the traffic, and the contractor put in place effective logistics for a traffic management and diversion plan for pedestrian safety while the bridge construction lasts

Recall that, the damage to the bridge which was constructed eleven years ago was caused by the impact of a container-laden truck, that tried to maneuver under the bridge bearing a load that was far beyond the provided headroom of the Bridge thereby causing a negative impact to both vehicular traffic and pedestrian users of the Bridge.
