Democracy day: President Bola Tinubu to address joint session of the National Assembly at 12pm

The Federal Government has cancelled the traditional military parade initially planned for the 26th Democracy Day celebrations on Thursday, June 12, 2025.

No official reason was provided for the cancellation. However, in place of the parade, President Bola Tinubu will deliver a national broadcast at 7:00 a.m. on Thursday, according to a statement released on Wednesday by the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Democracy Day Celebration.

Later in the day, the president will attend a special joint session of the National Assembly at noon. The session will highlight Nigeria’s democratic milestones and recent government reforms.

The revised programme of events was outlined in a notice signed by Abdulhakeem Adeoye, on behalf of the Director of Information & Public Relations in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

The statement reads:

“The Inter-Ministerial Committee wishes to announce the following developments on the 26th Democracy Day celebration:

  1. Presidential National Broadcast – June 12, 2025, at 7:00 a.m.
  2. No Democracy Day Parade.
  3. President Bola Tinubu to attend the National Assembly Joint Session at 12:00 noon.
  4. Public Lecture on Democracy Day Celebration at the State House Conference Centre, Abuja – 4:00 p.m.

Theme: Consolidating on the Gains of Nigeria’s Democracy: Necessity of Enduring Reforms.”

The committee added that the Democracy Day public lecture will be covered exclusively by accredited State House correspondents.
