The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has seized 88,560 litres of sulphuric and nitric acids stored in gallons at a warehouse in the Kwakwaci area of Fagge Local Government, Kano State.
The confiscated chemicals, while also used in fertilizer production, are key components in the manufacturing of explosives. According to Dr. Martins Iluyomade, NAFDAC’s Director of Investigation and Enforcement, the quantity recovered is enough to cause devastation across the entire state.
Speaking to journalists on Wednesday, Iluyomade described the discovery as alarming, noting that these are classified as controlled substances requiring clearance from the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) before importation.
He added that the warehouse owner is not listed in the national database of licensed chemical marketers, raising serious concerns over how such a large volume of sensitive materials was acquired and stored without proper authorisation or oversight.
