Sixteen inmates escaped on Tuesday from the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Keffi, Nasarawa State.
The breakout occurred in the early hours following a security breach at the facility, according to a statement by Umar Abubakar, spokesperson for the Nigerian Correctional Service.
During the escape, the inmates overpowered the personnel on duty.
“The Nigerian Correctional Service wishes to inform the public of an incident that took place early today, 12th August 2025, at the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Keffi, Nasarawa State,” the statement said.
“Some inmates breached the facility’s security and attacked staff on duty, allowing 16 inmates to escape custody.
“In efforts to control the situation, five personnel were injured, with two sustaining serious injuries and currently receiving urgent medical care at a government health facility. Seven of the escaped inmates have been recaptured and are back in custody.”
Efforts are ongoing to track down and apprehend the remaining escapees.
Following the incident, Controller General of Corrections Sylvester Nwakuche visited the facility and ordered a full investigation into the escape. He warned that any staff found to be involved will face disciplinary action.
“Nwakuche has also directed an immediate search for the fleeing inmates, working with other security agencies.
“The public is urged to stay calm, be vigilant, and report any suspicious activity or sightings of the escaped inmates to the nearest security agency,” the statement added.
This is not the first major prison break in recent years. Last year, nearly 120 inmates escaped from Suleja prison near Abuja after heavy rains damaged buildings and a perimeter wall. In July 2022, about 600 prisoners, including suspected members of Boko Haram and Islamic State, fled from Kuje prison near Abuja following an attack. In April 2021, over 1,800 prisoners escaped after gunmen attacked a prison in Imo State. Additionally, more than 800 inmates escaped during a jailbreak in Oyo State in July of the same year.
