Tinubu appoints governing council, to Varsities

President Bola Tinubu has appointed Chisom Obih to the Governing Council of Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi State, following the death of a council member.

In addition, Tinubu appointed Professor Ralph Akinfeleye, a distinguished communications expert, to the Governing Council of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State.

This was announced in a press statement on Tuesday, signed by Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

The statement highlighted that Akinfeleye is the former Head of the Department of Mass Communication at the University of Lagos and currently chairs the Centre of Excellence in Multimedia and Cinematography, as well as Unilag Radio 103.1 FM and Television.

Previously a member of the Governing Council at Yakubu Gowon University, Abuja, Akinfeleye takes over from Mr. Wahab Owokoniran, who was appointed Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Federal University of Transport, Daura, Katsina State.

The President also named Professor Ibrahim Adamu Yakasai as the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Health Sciences and Technology, Tsafe, Zamfara State.

Other appointments at the university include Mr. Hamisu Yusuf Yelwa as Registrar, Usman Nakazalle Sanusi as Bursar, and Dr. Shehu Aminu Liman as Librarian.

A retired Nigerian Army Colonel, Professor Yakasai currently serves as the Provost of the College of Health Sciences at Bayero University, Kano. He also chairs the Committee of Provosts of Colleges of Medicine in Nigeria and is a member of the Governing Council of the Federal University of Health Sciences, Otukpo, Benue State.

He earned his MBBS from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and later received a scholarship from the European Economic Commission to pursue postgraduate studies in the UK, where he became a member and fellow of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.

Professor Yakasai also holds a Master’s degree in Medical Education from the University of Winchester. He further advanced his qualifications in the USA by obtaining fellowships from the International College of Surgeons (FICS) and the American College of Surgeons.

He has previously served as Director-General of the Hospitals Management Board in Kano State.
