Kano set to grant amnesty to 1,600 repentant political thugs

The Kano State Government has unveiled a new plan to offer amnesty to repentant political thugs through its ‘Safe Corridor’ initiative, aimed at curbing youth unrest and political violence in the state.

This announcement was made on Wednesday by the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Abdullahi-Waiya, during the launch of the programme at the state police headquarters.

According to Waiya, 718 youths have already been profiled, while another 960 are awaiting police verification before they can be enrolled.

“Governor Abba Yusuf is deeply concerned about the rise in thuggery, which he believes tarnishes the state’s image,” Waiya stated. “This is why he has initiated this well-thought-out programme to address the issue directly.”

He noted that the programme includes drug testing, rehabilitation, and reintegration of the youths into society.

“We understand that many of these young people were manipulated by unscrupulous politicians and did not willingly choose this path. The government finds this unacceptable and is committed to ending it,” he added.

Waiya emphasised that those who pass the police validation process will be granted amnesty.

“Once granted, the amnesty will absolve them of all past crimes, and they will be regarded as law-abiding citizens,” he said.

Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Adamu Bakori called on individuals still in possession of weapons to surrender them, stressing that the programme offers a fresh start and a chance to contribute positively to society.

Additionally, Hisbah Board Commander-General Sheikh Aminu Daurawa urged the repentant individuals to assist authorities by providing information on drug dealers and persuading others to renounce violence and join the programme.
