The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has confirmed that a fire outbreak at Mandilas Market on Lagos Island destroyed at least 120 shops and left one person injured.
The incident, which occurred on Tuesday night, engulfed Emab Plaza — a four-storey building located behind the popular market. According to NEMA, the fire started around 9 p.m. on the fourth floor and quickly spread to adjacent structures due to the high concentration of flammable materials like clothing, footwear, and plastics.
In an update posted Thursday, the agency revealed that the fire was triggered by a faulty changeover switch, which ignited the blaze before it spread uncontrollably.
Emergency responders from both federal and state fire services, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, and other relevant bodies battled the flames through the night. One individual sustained injuries from smoke inhalation and is currently receiving treatment.
Four buildings, housing nearly 200 shops, were destroyed. The Nigeria Police were also on the scene to secure the area and prevent vandalism.
NEMA noted that its Lagos Operations Office is collaborating with stakeholders to support affected traders and raise safety awareness in high-density markets.
